Today’s beer review for my 50 beer challenge is from Big Sky Brewing out of Missoula, Montana. With a name that makes Montana fish squirm, Trout Slayer is a pale wheat ale that is very sessionable with just 5% ABV. It almost makes me want to pack up and head down to the river with a few beers and my fishing pole.
Anyways, on to the review.
Trout Slayer poured a very clean and clear yellow color with some slight carbonation and a huge thick white head that hung around for a long time. There was some pretty spectacular lacing left on the glass. Overall a very nice looking beer.
The aroma was a lot stronger than I thought it would be (not IPA strong, but stronger than most wheat ales) as it was packed with wheat and bready malts with some sweetness tied in that I can’t quite put my finger on. It’s slightly citrusy and almost tea like. While not that spectacular, it was a very crisp smell.
The flavor of this beer was pretty good, although I can already hear the hop heads whining since there isn’t a huge hop presence. This would be a great beer to bring camping or just to enjoy on a warm summer day (you could probably drink 3 or 4 before you felt any of the alcohol).
Following the nose, the taste was filled with wheat and biscuit flavors with some slight lemon and sweetness in the background. At the end there is the smallest amount of bitterness that seems to fade pretty quickly leaving a nice aftertaste.
This is a pretty light bodied beer that I would describe with the word clean. While I’m not sure it stands out from other wheat beers, it is definitely a pretty solid drink that I’d try again, especially if I ever find myself in Montana.
