Marble Brewery Oatmeal Stout
Marble Brewery Oatmeal Stout
I’ve spent a little time in New Mexico years back (since that’s where my father in law lives), but I’ve yet to try any New Mexican beers. In my time there, I wouldn’t have thought that it would be a great craft beer producing state, but I was wrong.  While they don’t have a lot of big name breweries, they do have a few smaller players who are creating some great brews.

Since their distribution is pretty small, I was lucky enough to do a beer trade (thanks Todd) and get my hands on a couple of New Mexican born beers.  I decided to review Marble Brewery’s Oatmeal stout to represent their state in my 50 beer challenge since they are located in Albuquerque.

Marble Brewery is a fairly new company that was founded in 2008 (which was after the last time I’ve been to Albuquerque).  Currently they only have distribution in their own state so I definitely was excited to try their Oatmeal Stout.

The Oatmeal Stout poured an extremely dark black with some carbonation clinging on the sides of the glass and a thick carmel looking head that dominated the top of the glass.  The lacing that was left behind was pretty solid.  Overall an amazing looking oatmeal stout that got me drooling just by looking at it.

While definitely a mild smell, it was packed with aromas of roasted coffee like malts with a somewhat sweet chocolate and carmel undertone.  I would have liked a little more of an aromatic punch to the face with this as it did smell delicious, it just was not all that strong.

The flavor of this beast definitely made up for the mild aroma as it is fairly complex, bold, and 100% delicious.  It starts a little bitter toasted coffee and turns to a sweet fruit and slightly hoppy flavor.  Somewhere in between some chocolate and burnt malt flavors take over and leave you with an aftertaste that makes me want to pack my bags and move to New Mexico (ok, not really.. but it’s really good).

This is such a smooth bodied beer with such a great flavor that I could literally drink this all night.  Throw in the fact that it’s only 5% ABV and you have yourself a terrific sessionable beer that only gets better the more you drink it.

This would definitely be an A rated beer if the nose was a little stronger.  I did have it in a 22oz bomber, so I’m sure it probably would be a little more dominate on tap.  If you’re ever in New Mexico you need to try this beer.
