While it’s the beginning of March and the spring seasonal are starting to come out, I wanted to take a step back and do a review of a new to me winter ale from Black Diamond Brewing out of Concord, Ca. It still feels like winter here, so on with the review.
The beer poured a very dark red/brownish color that was a bit to hazy to see any carbonation. There was very little head or lacing on the glass and wasn’t to impressive to look at.
I absolutely love the aroma in this beer. It has the smell of some dried fruit, prunes, malt, belgian style yeast and brown suger. It took me awhile to take my first drink since I sat here smelling it like a giddy school girl.
The taste aligned pretty well with the smell and definitely has some nice spice flavor along with raisins, cherry, and some slight chocolate flavors. You can really taste the yeast in the aftertaste. I really enjoyed the flavor of this beer, however the aftertaste wasn’t nearly as good.
Overall this was a pretty good Dubbel for the price. I could definitely see eating some good cheeses with this and wouldn’t hesitate to try it again. With 7.2% ABV, it makes for an excellent Winter Warmer.
