Today I was digging through my beer and decided to try out Lunar Ale from Boulevard Brewing Co., which has been sitting in my collection for a few months. Boulevard is based in the Midwest, so I don’t see very many of their beers around here. On their website, they say Lunar Ale is in a class of its own as it doesn’t fit any common beer styles (but I’d say it’s a brown ale/dark wheat ale).
Lunar poured a very dark and hazy amber color with very little visible carbonation. There was a nice tan head that was pretty thick which hung out with me for awhile. There was also some nice lacing on the glass. The beer did look pretty beautiful (although I think most beers do).
The smell was pretty fruity. It’s not a strong aroma, but I could definitely smell banana, citrus and cloves.
Tasting it, I agree 100% with them that it’s in a class of its own. The flavor is almost like its a mixture of a brown ale and hefeweizen with some slight Belgian notes. It definitely hits you up front with a very sweet flavor, but you also catch some spiciness in the aftertaste. The first few sips I wasn’t really sure what to think of this beer, but halfway through the glass I really started to appreciate it.
Overall the flavor seemed to be fairly complex, but there is something about it that is lacking for me. I think it needs just a touch more hops to complete the flavor. It’s very drinkable and refreshing, but I do feel like I’m left wanting more out of it.
Lunar Ale is worth a try in my book.
