It’s been awhile since I’ve posted up a beer review on Blog About Beer.
I’ve been so busy writing my book on Oregon beers that I haven’t had much time to drink anything else. The book is done (although it won’t be available until March 2013) so I’m back in the saddle.
Over the past few months I’ve been lucky enough to get beer each month from The Original Craft Beer Club. Each month they send me 4 different beer styles and one of them happened to be Dos Perros Ale from Yazoo Brewing Company.
If you’ve been following the blog for awhile, you might remember last year I did a challenge to drink 50 beers from 50 states. I fell short by about 15 states, but am going to try and finish. With this beer from Yahoo, I can check Tennessee off my list.
The Review
Dos Perros is a unique Mexican style beer. Oddly enough Rate Beer classified it as an Altbier and Beer Advocate classifies it as a Brown Ale. Either way, I was anxious to try it.
You could definitely call it a session beer at only 3.5% ABV. I think that’s the lowest alcohol content I’ve had in a beer in a really long time.
The beer poured a clear light brown with a small off white head that didn’t last too long. It was very clean with some beautiful carbonation making it’s way to the top.
It’s aroma was very faint with smells of caramel, malt and brown sugar.
Caramel, nuts and toasted malt are the dominate flavors with a touch of brown sugar sweetness making itself known. It has an incredibly light mouthfeel that would make this an easy beer to knock back all night long.
Yazoo suggest pairing it with either Mexican and Thai food. It’s so light yet malty that I could easily see this pairing well with barbecued salmon as well.
I’ve also heard that Yazoo suggests adding a lime to it which would work well and help round out the flavor a bit.
Overall I’d drink it again, but wouldn’t be something I’d seek out.
ABV: 3.5%
IBUs: 21
Style: Mexican Ale (Brown or Altbier?)
